Welcome to our second edition of Jane's Pacific
Islands Radio Newsletter (Island Music) for
July 2004. I do hope that this Newsletter finds
you all well and are enjoying the beautiful and
enchanting sounds of the Pacific Islands. I
would like to extend our very warm welcome to
all our many new members who have joined us
since our very first edition of our Newsletter.
Welcome on board and please make yourself feel
at home!

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this Newsletter is to provide
supplementary information to the listeners of
our four Internet Radio Stations. These being
the three Pacific Islands Radio Stations as well
as Micronesia Music Radio. This information will
embrace some of the exciting changes taking
place in the Internet Radio Revolution as well
as updated information on the Programming and
Playlists.

NEWS AND VIEWS

It is very pleasing to be able to advise that an
anthropology of traditional Micronesian music is
currently being prepared. This anthropology will
contain discussions of the traditional Micronesian
music along with the Micronesian interpretation of
the creative procedures that are followed in the
composition of traditional Micronesian music.

The anthropology will also include over 30 tracks
of traditional music along with some contemporary
interpretations of our traditional Micronesian
music. With each track, there will be an
introduction which explains a little more of what
the track is about.

The tracks will include traditional chants, love
songs and music with a  focus on the early life
of the Micronesian people.

This programme will run for about an hour and
the timing will be notified in our August
2004 Newsletter.

PACIFIC ISLANDS RADIO

Pacific Islands Radio continues to offer a
range of broadcasting formats in order to allow
a wide range of listeners to enjoy our beautiful
island music. These formats, in terms of
Connection Speed and Sound Quality are basically
as follows:

STATIONS

Pacific Islands Radio with a connection speed of
32 kbps is FM Stereo - FM mp3PRO;

Pacific Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music
Radio 33K with connection speeds of 24 kbps are
AM Quality; and

Pacific Islands Radio 28K with a connection speed
of 16 kbps is AM Quality.

Perhaps I should mention here that the previous
practice of specifying a minimum connection speed
has now been upgraded. Now, instead of specifying
a bitrate, our broadcast formats are specified in
terms of a combination of bitrate, sampling rate,
stereo mode and codec.

These changes have allowed the introduction of
Pacific Islands Radio (FM mp3PRO) broadcasting
in high fidelity FM stereo as well as allowing
an upgrade in the fidelity of Pacific Islands
Radio 33K and Micronesia Music Radio 33K while
still broadcasting at the same bitrate (24 kbps).

Also, in the longer term, 33K will be referred
to as 24kbps and 28K will become 16 kbps -
please keep an eye out for these changes.

As usual, Pacific Islands Radio is always keen to
promote our talented island musicians worldwide
in order to satisfy the continuing demand for our
beautiful and distinctive Pacific Island music!
In this respect, should you know of
any island artists whose talents you would like
to see promoted, please contact me on:
jane@pacificislandsradio.com

Our four Pacific Islands Radio Stations play the
enchanting music of the Pacific Islands 24 hours

FEATURE ARTISTS

TE VAKA

Without doubt, Te Vaka is the best known musical
group in the South Pacific and quite deservedly so.
The music of Te Vaka captures the very essence of
the Pacific Islands. The history, the mythology and
the lifestyle of Pacific Island people are
reflected in their powerful music.

With members drawn from various islands of
Polynesia, Te Vaka, under the leadership of talented
songwriter/musician and performer, Opetaia Foa'i,
provides the listener with a chance to feel the very
soul of our Polynesian people.

Te Vaka's fourth album, 'Tutuki'  was produced by
Opetaia Foa'i and was released at the end of May,
2004. This album follows the examples of Te Vaka's
previous three very successful albums and keeps
alive the traditions of storytelling and the language
of Tokelau.

It is impossible to fully describe this remarkable and
most original Polynesian group in a few short paragraphs
To find out more about Te Vaka and to experience and
appreciate their dynamic and magical music, it is my
great pleasure to highly recommend a visit to Te Vaka's
excellent Web site below:

VANESSA QUAI - VANUATU

The excellent and most exciting performance of our last
month's Feature Artist, Vanessa Quai, on the 28th May
2004 at the "Cebu Nyani" Music Festival in Poindimier
in the Northern Province of New Caledonia, ran for two
and a half hours non-stop and absolutely bowled over the
audience. The crowd of more than 7,000 danced non-stop
and called Vanessa back for several encores - an
incredible performance from this amazing artist. I am
very proud and pleased to be able to advise that Vanessa
will be performing in Fiji on the 29th July 2004.

For those of us who will be in Fiji at that time, this
is a concert not to be missed.

Pacific Islands Radio is very proud to be able to advise
that, in addition to Vanessa's album "Pacifika", her two
earlier albums will shortly be featured on the three
Pacific Islands Radio Playlists with the exclusion of
Micronesia Music Radio.

To learn a little more about this incredible young and
most talented artist, including a recent picture of her
New Caledonia performance, you are invited to visit
Vanessa Quai's dedicated website at:

LETTERS

The following are extracts from a few
of the interesting letters that I have
recently received about our four Pacific
Islands Radio Stations. I would very
much like to share them with you as I
find many of these letters to be most
gratifying, motivating and touching.
Please join with me in thanking these
wonderful people for sharing their
thoughts with us.

Yours is a lovely website. The music is
stirring and encourages one to linger.
Good job!

Hello,

My name is Christopher Currie, and I
live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

I've been listening to your Pacific
Islands station on Radio365 recently
-- I'm extremely curious to learn more
about the music of the region, and
your station has been helpful toward
this end.

I'm currently involved in a project
wherein I'm attempting to listen to
music from every nation in the world.
Thanks to your station, I've been
able to cover quite a few nations
which had previously been inaccessible
to me -- but there are still a few that
I'm missing.

Can I request that you feature music
from the following nations, if
possible:

Nauru
Tuvalu
Marshall Islands
Solomon Islands
*
I normally listen to your station after
midnight in Kingston (I'm not quite sure
what time that would be for you).
************
Dear Jane
I've searched the site but had no luck.
Can you please tell me where the next
Festival is to be held (2006 I believe).
And where I can find some information on
it. I've said it before and I'll say it
again - love your site. My only wish is
that I could get the music to listen to
when I'm off line working. It makes me
feel so warm and good inside. Best
wishes.
************
Hello Jane,
Hey nice website and I enjoyed the music
as well, I live in Orlando, Fl and I find
your way of living to be so cool, anyway
I just wanted to say hello and thanks for
sharing your world with me. Have a great
day.
************
Jane,
Mauri-o! My name is David, and I am a
former Peace Corps Volunteer who served
in Kiribati, on Tabiteuea Meang. I found
your website on the internet and the
links to the Pacific Island Radio station.
I love it! It's so nice to hear the music
that I always heard on the buses in Tarawa,
at botaki, and sung by my school children.

I have bookmarked the page and will listen
to it frequently, but I was wondering if
it would somehow be possible for me to get
copies of the music from the Tarawa-Kiribati
Compilation. Please let me know. I look
forward to hearing back from you.
Ti a bo!
************
Hi, Jane, I'm Brad and I wanted to personally
thank you for sharing your beloved islands
and people with me via the music. You bring
me closer to my heart. Thank you.
