OBJECTIVES

The objective of this Newsletter is to provide
supplementary information to the listeners of
our four Internet Radio Stations. These being

Radio. This information will embrace some of
the exciting changes taking place in the Internet
Radio Revolution as well as updated information
on the Programming and Playlists.

NEWS AND VIEWS

MICRONESIA MUSIC ANTHOLOGY

Firstly, it is my pleasure to let you know that
I have recently completed an anthology of
Micronesia music which is available on Micronesia
Music Radio:

http://www.live365.com/stations/jane_resture

The anthology can be accessed by clicking on the
Schedule after logging in to Micronesia Music
Radio. This should allow you (and other listeners)
to determine when the anthology is available in your
part of the world. For example, on the Australian
Gold Coast, Australian Eastern Standard Time, the
anthology is available at 12 noon each Saturday. In
California, the anthology would be available at
7 pm each Friday evening, New York would be 10 pm
each Friday evening along with Florida and Boston,
Massachusetts, USA. etc.

The schedule can also be accessed at the following
URL:
http://www.live365.com/broadcast/scheduler/?stationname=jane_resture

The traditional music of Micronesia is distinctively
different from other regions of the Pacific. This
music employs very few instruments with the main
instruments being conch shell horns, sticks, and the
"box" which is beaten by a multitude of hands to
provide a beat to accompany the singing which always
predominates. With no written language, the traditional
music of Micronesia encompasses the rich tapestry of
tradition, spiritualism and culture of the Micronesian
people.

The anthology runs for 90 minutes in which the
traditional chants are introduced followed by
the songs of Micronesia including many from the
Marshall Islands and Arno Atoll (Aeroplane Song).

These songs range from traditional songs which
have a chant-like presentation followed by later
songs which use background instruments. The
program culminates in two contemporary
interpretations of traditional Micronesian chants.

Also, the supporting Web site to the anthology
is as follows:

PACIFIC ISLANDS RADIO

Pacific Islands Radio continues to offer a range
of broadcasting formats in order to allow a wide
range of listeners to enjoy our beautiful island
music. These formats, in terms of Connection Speed
and Sound Quality are basically as follows:

STATIONS

Pacific Music Radio with a connection speed of
32 kbps is FM Stereo - FM mp3PRO;

Pacific Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music
Radio 33K with connection speeds of 24 kbps are
AM Quality; and

Pacific Islands Radio 28K with a connection speed
of 16 kbps is AM Quality.

Perhaps I should mention here that the previous
practice of specifying a minimum connection speed
has now been upgraded. Now, instead of specifying
a bitrate, our broadcast formats are specified in
terms of a combination of bitrate, sampling rate,
stereo mode and codec.

These changes have allowed the introduction of
Pacific Music Radio (FM mp3PRO) broadcasting
in high fidelity FM stereo as well as allowing
an upgrade in the fidelity of Pacific Islands
Radio 33K and Micronesia Music Radio 33K while
still broadcasting at the same bitrate (24 kbps).

Also, in the longer term, 33K will be referred
to as 24kbps and 28K will become 16 kbps -
please keep an eye out for these changes.

As usual, Pacific Islands Radio is always keen
to promote our talented island musicians
worldwide in order to satisfy the continuing
demand for our beautiful and distinctive Pacific
Island music! In this respect, should you know
of any island artists whose talents you would
like to see promoted, please contact me on:

FEATURE ARTISTS
ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO'OLE

The gentle giant Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is regarded
by many as the most honoured Hawaiian singer of
all times. This gentle giant who sadly passed away
in 1997 at the young age of 38 left behind a
remarkable legacy of five solo albums and ten disks
with his group, the Makaha Sounds. In a 20 year
career, Israel composed and interpreted major
works of contemporary Hawaiian music.

With an amazing vocal range, and the voice of an
angel, he was an artist whose extraordinary talent
left no listener untouched.

LES GRANDS BALLETS DE TAHITI

Les Grands Ballets De Tahiti are a professional
dance troupe who give the Tahitian Islands a most
sought-out and innovative image. Their dances,
rhythms, music and songs carry the spirit between
traditional and contemporary. Founded in its
current form in 1998, the Les Grands Ballets De
Tahiti troupe renewed Polynesian music with a
great respect for tradition while at the same
time breathing in a certain modernism.

Their objective is to give an international
dimension to the performing arts of Tahiti to a
worldwide audience. They have already performed
in the United States and Japan and, in addition,
a lot of other countries have had the chance to
welcome them.

TOXIE

Originally from Bellona, one of the islands in the
Solomons in the Melanesian Archipelago, populated
mainly by Polynesian people, Toxie is regarded as
one of the most successful singers in the Pacific
region. Overflowing with talent, this young man,
shortly after the release of his first international
album, received a musical award for a jungle remix
by a respected Australian organization, an award
coveted by the entire Pacific musical community. His
Polynesian sensitivity is very apparent with a female
chorus playing a large part in his arrangements.

BLACK ROSE

One of Fiji's popular bands, the career of Black
Rose began in the mid 1990s when they started to
play standards in the hotels of Suva or Nadi on the
island of Viti Levu. Today, they are accorded the
status of respected musicians and leaders of the
music community on the Fijian Archipelago. Their
music is an invitation to discover Fiji, one of the
last paradises on earth in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean.

VANESSA - VANESSA QUAI PICTURE GALLERY

Pacific Islands Radio is very pleased to advise that a
Vanessa Quai Picture Gallery is now online which will
be progressively developed as more pictures become
available. The Vanessa Quai Picture Gallery can be viewed
at the following Web site:
http://www.pacificislandsradio.com/profiles/vanessa_quai/pictures.htm

Also, Pacific Islands Radio is proud to say that the
following three CDs of Vanessa Quai and Edou Wamai
will shortly be added to the Playlists on our Pacific
Islands Radio stations:

Beautiful Pacific Islands - Vanessa Quai (Fisrt Album)
The Untouched Paradise - Vanessa Quai (Second Album)
Machetro - Edou Wamai (Latest Album)

LETTERS

The following are extracts from a few
of the interesting letters that I have
recently received about our four Pacific
Islands Radio Stations. I would very
much like to share them with you as I
find many of these letters to be most
gratifying, motivating and touching.
Please join with me in thanking these
wonderful people for sharing their
thoughts with us.

Enjoyed the music on your site....
Can you give me the source of your information
on archeological finds in the Line Is., esp.
the links to Tonga. Pukapukan traditions link
them with these islands to the north. I want to
track down the museum(s) where the adzes, photos
from the LIne Islands are held, and correspond
with the scholars who know about them. Your
help is much appreciated.

Dear Jane,
I recently came across your Pacific Islands Radio
stations and let me say how much I enjoyed the
beautiful music that you present. I lived in Fiji
for a number of years when I was much younger and
listening to your station brought back so many
pleasant memories of my happy times in Fiji.
Thank you so very much.

Hi Jane
It has been such a pleasure to listen to the
music from home here in the United States. I
come from Palau and it makes me feel like a
little part of home has come with me. Keep up
the good work.

I love the island music going back to my WW2
days ( I guess that kind of dates me ) I have
downloaded the Live365 Player but the only music
I can get is that on your home page. What do I
have to do to hear the other stations or are they
all part of the premium station program. Please
advise & help an old timer out.
