Jane's Pacific Islands Radio Newsletter
(Island Music) Vol. 1, Edition No.4, September 2004 http://www.pacificislandsradio.com/ I N T H I S I S S U E ___________________________________________ Objectives News and Views Pacific Islands Radio Feature Artist Suppliers Playlist Links Letters Welcome everybody to our fourth edition of Jane's Pacific Islands Radio Newsletter (Island Music) for September 2004. I do hope that this Newsletter finds you all well and are enjoying the beautiful and enchanting sounds of the Pacific Islands. I would like to extend a warm Pacific Island welcome and very sincere greetings to all our very many new members who have joined us since our last Newsletter. Welcome on board, please make yourself feel at home, relax and enjoy the wonderful and enchanting magic and sounds of the Pacific Islands! OBJECTIVES The objective of this Newsletter is to provide supplementary information to the listeners of our four Internet Radio Stations. These being the two Pacific Islands Radio Stations as well as Pacific Music Radio and Micronesia Music Radio. This information will embrace some of the exciting changes taking place in the Internet Radio Revolution as well as updated information on the Programming and Playlists. NEWS AND VIEWS MICRONESIA MUSIC ANTHOLOGY Firstly, I would like to thank all those wonderful and good people who have taken the time and opportunity to enjoy the anthology of Micronesia music which is available on Micronesia Music Radio: http://www.live365.com/stations/jane_resture The anthology can be accessed by clicking on the Broadcast Schedule after logging in to Micronesia Music Radio. This should allow you (and our other listeners worldwide) to determine when the anthology is available in your beautiful part of the world. For example, on the Australian Gold Coast, the anthology is available at 12 noon each Saturday and Kiribati at 2 pm each Saturday afternoon. In California, the anthology is available at 7 pm each Friday evening, New York at 10 pm each Friday evening along with Florida and Boston, Massachusetts, USA. etc. The schedule can also be accessed at the following URL: http://www.live365.com/broadcast/scheduler/?stationname=jane_resture The supporting Web site to the anthology is as follows: http://www.janesoceania.com/micronesia_music_anthology/index.htm GOSPEL MUSIC Since the first arrival of the missionaries in Oceania, gospel music has been a feature of music in the Pacific Islands. The musical forms given to us by the missionaries have been embraced by our island people and embellished with distinctively island flavours of vibrancy, rhythm and harmony to produce an exciting and uplifting musical experience. In this respect, Pacific Islands Radio is very pleased to be able to advise that a collection of some of the most exciting and absorbing gospel music from the Pacific Islands will soon become a regular feature on Pacific Music Radio (FM mp3PRO Stereo), Pacific Islands Radio 33K (24 kbps) as well as Pacific Islands Radio 28K (16 kbps) Running for over sixty minutes, without introduction or voice-overs, the gospel collection will be available each weekend and will feature the music of a number of extremely talented artists and groups such as Vanessa Quai (Vanuatu), Bata Teinamati, Betania Gospel Singers and Emmaus Family Singers Vol. 6 (Republic of Kiribati) and The Auckland Pacific Gospel Choir (APGC). The collection will be available this coming weekend! Please monitor the Broadcast Schedule of the above three Pacific Islands Radio stations for the availability and time for the gospel music collection. These will also be advised and confirmed in our next edition of this Newsletter. PACIFIC ISLANDS RADIO Pacific Islands Radio continues to offer a range of broadcasting formats in order to allow a wide range of listeners to enjoy our beautiful island music. These formats, in terms of Connection Speed and Sound Quality are basically as follows: STATIONS Pacific Music Radio with a connection speed of 32 kbps is FM Stereo - FM mp3PRO; Pacific Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music Radio 33K with connection speeds of 24 kbps are AM Quality; and Pacific Islands Radio 28K with a connection speed of 16 kbps is AM Quality. Perhaps I should mention also that the previous practice of specifying a minimum connection speed has now been upgraded. Now, instead of specifying a bitrate, our broadcast formats are specified in terms of a combination of bitrate, sampling rate, stereo mode and codec. These changes have allowed the introduction of Pacific Music Radio (FM mp3PRO Stereo) broadcasting in high fidelity FM stereo as well as allowing an upgrade in the fidelity of Pacific Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music Radio 33K while still broadcasting at the same bitrate (24 kbps). Also, in the longer term, 33K will be referred to as 24kbps and 28K will become 16 kbps - please keep an eye out for these changes. As usual, Pacific Islands Radio is always keen to promote our talented island musicians worldwide in order to satisfy the continuing demand for our beautiful and distinctive Pacific Island music! In this respect, should you know of any island artists whose talents you would like to see promoted, please contact me on: jane@pacificislandsradio.com Our four Pacific Islands Radio Stations play the enchanting music of the Pacific Islands 24 hours daily. www.pacificislandsradio.com http://www.pacificislandsradio.com/index.htm http://www.janeresture.com/radio/index.htm Pacific Music Radio (mp3PRO) http://www.live365.com/stations/drjaneresture Pacific Islands Radio 33K (24 kbps) http://www.live365.com/stations/janeresture Pacific Islands Radio 28K (16 kbps) http://www.live365.com/stations/janeres Micronesia Music Radio 33K (24 kbps) http://www.live365.com/stations/jane_resture FEATURE ARTISTS DENNIS KAMAKAHI Dennis Kamakahi presents a delightful range of traditional and modern Hawaiian music. Also featured are some beautiful harmonies with Dennis's son, David. In addition, Dennis Kamakahi is a recognized expert in the technique known as slack key guitar which he learned from his father, a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band who played slack key and trombone. In slack key, players usually tune down some of the strings from the standard guitar tuning. The bass strings are played with the thumb while the other fingers play the melody and improvisation in a finger-picked style. The roots of slack key can be traced back to the 1830s when the guitar was brought to the Hawaiian islands by Spanish and Mexican cowboys. The Hawaiians quickly adopted the guitar into their culture, creating many ingenious tunings to suit their music, often to match a vocal range. The music of Dennis Kamakahi was obtained from www.amazon.com THE AUCKLAND PACIFIC GOSPEL CHOIR The Auckland Pacific Gospel Choir (APGC) is New Zealand's premier Pacific Choir - known for their unique and distinctive Pacific Gospel fusion sound which is distinctively New Zealand Pacific. It is widely recognized that Pacific peoples have a gift for story telling through oratory and music. The combination of these two mediums has allowed APGC comprising Pacific peoples in New Zealand, to continue this age-old tradition through the chants and melodies of traditional folk songs and chants as well as the simple message of hope through Jesus Christ. These songs tell their own stories which only Pacific peoples can tell. The music of the Auckland Pacific Gospel Choir can be obtained from Kingmusic: http://www.kingmusic.co.nz/ GEORGE TELEK The music of Papua New Guinea's George Mamua Telek perfectly captures the spirit of the Tolai people. George Telek comes from the village of Raluana, near Rabaul on the Papua New Guinea island of New Britain. The sound of George Telek is essentially acoustic with the gentle guitars underpinned by ancestral drums such as the hourglass shaped kundu and the massive slit logs known as garumut. Above all, however, the music embodies the rich and unique three part harmonies, sung both in the Tolai language as well as pidgin English. The music of George Telek was obtained from www.amazon.com BATA TEINAMATI The music of Bata Teinamati, from the Republic of Kiribati, has a strong compelling combination of rhythm and vocals which produces an exciting and absorbing musical style. Bata Teinamati has successfully integrated the traditional music of Kiribati with contemporary musical techniques and instrumentation in a manner which results in an enthralling musical experience. The vocal style of Bata Teinamati allows the Kiribati language to be represented in a modern idiom that is both dynamic and compelling. The songs tell of the life of the Kiribati people, love songs, gospel songs and contemporary representations of chants to Kiribati gods and mythology. Bata Teinamati has a commanding vocal style which sets him apart as an outstanding musician. The music of Bata Teinamati is available from the following exclusive distributor: Bwanaraoi Music Shop: E-mail: angirota@tskl.net.ki EASTER ISLAND (RAPA NUI) The remote Polynesian outpost of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) has developed a unique and beautiful musical style that is a reflection of the unique and interesting lifestyle of the people of Easter Island. With an initial strong Tahitian influence, the music has evolved into a style that uniquely belongs to Easter Island. As an example of the best of contemporary Easter Island music, Pacific Islands Radio is very proud and pleased to be able to feature the music of Mito in an album entitled "Rapa Nui". This album can be obtained from Kingmusic: http://www.kingmusic.co.nz/ For a little more information on the music of Easter Island, you are invited to visit the following URL: http://www.janeresture.com/easter_music/index.htm VANESSA QUAI Congratulations to Vanessa Quai on being the only Pacific islander to be selected from among thousands of teenager artists worldwide to compete in the Final of the Golden Star Teenager Singing Competition!
