Radio. This information will embrace some of

NEWS AND VIEWS

MICRONESIA MUSIC ANTHOLOGY

Firstly, I would like to thank all those
wonderful and good people who have taken the
time and opportunity to enjoy the anthology
of Micronesia music which is available on
Micronesia Music Radio:
http://www.live365.com/stations/jane_resture

The anthology can be accessed by clicking on the
Broadcast Schedule after logging in to Micronesia
Music Radio. This should allow you (and our other
listeners worldwide) to determine when the anthology
is available in your beautiful part of the world. For
example, on the Australian Gold Coast, the anthology
is available at 12 noon each Saturday and Kiribati at
2 pm each Saturday afternoon. In California, the
anthology is available at 7 pm each Friday evening,
New York at 10 pm each Friday evening along with
Florida and Boston, Massachusetts, USA. etc.

The Broadcast Schedule can also be accessed at
the following URL:
http://www.live365.com/broadcast/scheduler/?stationname=jane_resture

The supporting Web site to the anthology
is as follows:

GOSPEL MUSIC

Pacific Islands Radio is very pleased to be able
to advise that a collection of some of the most
exciting and absorbing gospel music from the
Pacific Islands is now being featured on Pacific
Music Radio (FM mp3PRO Stereo), Pacific
Islands Radio 33K (24 kbps) as well as Pacific
Islands Radio 28K (16 kbps)

With an extended running time of three hours,
the gospel collection has proved to be extremely
popular and features the music of a number of
extremely talented artists and groups such as
Vanessa Quai (Vanuatu), Bata Teinamati,
Betania Gospel Singers and Emmaus Family
Singers (Republic of Kiribati), Lia Osborne
(Fiji), and The Auckland Pacific Gospel Choir.

Please monitor the Broadcast Schedule of the
above three Pacific Islands Radio stations for
the availability and time for the Gospel Music
collection. At present this exciting collection
is available at 12 midday Australian eastern time.

PACIFIC ISLANDS RADIO

Pacific Islands Radio continues to offer a range
of broadcasting formats in order to allow a wide
range of listeners to enjoy our beautiful island
music. These formats, in terms of Connection
Speed and Sound Quality are basically as
follows:

STATIONS

Pacific Music Radio with a connection speed of
32 kbps is FM Stereo - FM mp3PRO;

Pacific Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music
Radio 33K with connection speeds of 24 kbps are
AM Quality; and

Pacific Islands Radio 28K with a connection speed
of 16 kbps is AM Quality.

Perhaps I should mention also that the previous
practice of specifying a minimum connection speed
has now been upgraded. Now, instead of specifying
a bitrate, our broadcast formats are specified in
terms of a combination of bitrate, sampling rate,
stereo mode and codec.

These changes have allowed the introduction of
Pacific Music Radio (FM mp3PRO Stereo)
broadcasting in high fidelity FM stereo as well
as allowing an upgrade in the fidelity of Pacific
Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music Radio
33K while still broadcasting at the same bitrate
(24 kbps).

Also, in the longer term, 33K will be referred
to as 24kbps and 28K will become 16 kbps -
please keep an eye out for these changes.

As usual, Pacific Islands Radio is always keen
to promote our talented island musicians
worldwide in order to satisfy the continuing
demand for our beautiful and distinctive Pacific
Island music! In this respect, should you know
of any island artists whose talents you would
like to see promoted, please contact me on:
jane@pacificislandsradio.com

Our four Pacific Islands Radio Stations play the
enchanting music of the Pacific Islands 24 hours

SAMOA MUSIC

The Polynesians are natural musicians and the
Samoans are no exception. They love to hear
and sing good music. Robert Louis Stevenson
once said that the Samoans composed a song
for every trivial occasion. . . Song is almost
endless. The boatman sings at the oar, the
family and evening worship and the workman
at his toil. No occasion is too small for the
poets and the musicians; a death, a visit,
the day's news and pleasantries will be set
to rhyme and harmony.
http://www.janeresture.com/samoa_music/

Pacific Islands Radio is very pleased to
be able to feature a number of outstanding
musicians and groups from Samoa. The
groups include The Silver Band, All Stars
(formerly Pacific Soul) and the RSA Band,
recorded live at the RSA Nite Club, Apia in
1996.

FIJI MUSIC

From the WELCOME! music and enchanting
sounds that one receives upon arriving in Fiji
to the haunting melody of "Isa Lei", the music
of Fiji has that rare and special appeal to
embrace, excite, charm and lure the very
soul and being of the listener.

The music of Fiji represents the indigenous
traditions of the Fijian people along with those
of India, China, Europe and other Pacific islands.
Fijian music styles and structures include and
combine elements of Polynesian and
Melanesian music.
http://www.janesoceania.com/fiji_music/

The traditional and contemporary music of Fiji
is featured prominently on three of our four
Pacific Islands Radio stations. From the
traditional music "Bula Fiji Bula" and Kade to
the beautiful harmonies of Semi Keli and Lia
Osborne - these are only some of the talented
artists from Fiji presently featured on Pacific
Islands Radio.

OCEANIA LANGUAGES

As Captain James Cook's ships, the Resolution
and the Discovery, sailed along the coast of
Kauai, on the afternoon of January 19, 1778, the
first canoe loads of Hawaiians paddled out from
the shore to visit the strange vessels. To the
amazement of the Europeans, they found that,
on asking them for hogs, breadfruit and yams in
the dialect of Tahiti, they found were understood.

For the first time the extraordinary geographical
spread of the Polynesian peoples was fully
apparent to Europeans, and it was the similarity
of language that most strikingly marked their
kinship.

What is also apparent is that the language of
Polynesia as well as Melanesia and Micronesia,
has its own inherent similarity of expression in
the music of Oceania.

For more information in the evolution of Oceania
language, you are invited to visit the following URL:

LETTERS

The following are extracts from a few
of the interesting and most welcome
letters that I have recently received
about our four Pacific Islands Radio
Stations. I would very much like to
share them with you as I find many
of these letters to be most gratifying,
motivating and touching. Please join
with me in thanking these wonderful
people for sharing their thoughts
with us all.
************
Recently, several times I had the pleasure
of listening to some of the music played,
which I find most enchanting, as I do all
things Pacific, and like very much. Also,
I had the even greater pleasure, if this
is imaginable, of hearing your charming,
warm, and sympathetic, lovely voice.

While typing this, I am tuned in Pacific
Islands Radio and heard you explain
about how you were able to make your
many nation's music available over the
internet, mentioning the many places
from where you have received expressions
of support for your network. NOW YOU
CAN ADD MY NAME AND THE STATE
OF OKLAHOMA, USA, TO YOUR LIST.
Your music is playing on my REAL
PLAYER PLUS while I am typing this.
It is cheering me up a great deal and
inspiring me to write to you. Reception
here of the LIVE! broadcast is excellent
over my broadband connection (COX
CABLE COMMUNICATIONS)!

Surely, Polynesian speakers must get
even more out of the music than I who
do not know the meaning of the lyrics.
Yet, we know that music has a way of
speaking directly to the soul even in
the absence of verbal communication.

Dear Jane,

Nice listening to your Pacific Islands
Radio music. More nice to read your
eternal Pacific Islands stories.

So happy to find a source for the wonderful
music I enjoyed so much when we were
on Kwajalein 1990-1992.

Hi Jane, thank u for the wonderful pacific
island music. Have some friends in Samoa
and am planning to visit them soon, so it's
a bonus to listen to the pacific island
music in the meantine. Great job, keep up
the good work.Cheers

Jane, the music of the islands is simply
romantic. It makes me dream of beautiful
beaches and swaying palm trees -- great
stuff!

Thanks for the awesome service for us
homesick islanders. Part solomon islander;
part fiji indian. Huai Ngaoi and iu fala
namba wan tru!!

What a great job Jane you are doing for
South Pacific islands. There are very very
few web sites with some amount of
information about the South Pacific
islands. Addition broadcasting South
Pacific music - it could not have been done
better.

I listen to Pacific Islands Radio all the
time wherever I may be. Fantastic work Jane...
keep it up.
