I do hope that this Newsletter finds you all well and that you are enjoying the beautiful and enchanting sounds of Pacific Island music. I would like to extend a very warm and sincere Pacific Island welcome to all our many new members who have chosen to join us since our last Newsletter. Welcome on board, please make yourselves feel at home, relax and enjoy the enchanting, vibrant, exciting yet soothing, melodious and magical sounds of the Pacific Islands! OBJECTIVES The objective of this Newsletter is to provide supplementary information to the listeners of our four Internet Pacific Islands Radio Stations. These being the two Pacific Islands Radio Stations as well as Pacific Music Radio and Micronesia Music Radio. This information will embrace some of the exciting changes taking place in the Internet Radio Revolution as well as updated information on our Pacific Island Artists, as well as Programming and Playlists. NEWS AND VIEWS Pacific Islands Radio is very pleased to be able to continue presenting a selection of traditional and contemporary music drawn from across the Pacific Islands and, in particular from the diverse ethnic cultures of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Melanesia (from the Greek word melas - black, and nesos - island) is by far the oldest ethnic group in the Pacific region. Melanesia includes Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji. Melanesia has the widest diversity of instruments in the Pacific region, utilising all types of drums, slit-log gongs, a great variety of flutes and pipes. Contemporary Melanesian musicians such as George Telek from Papua New Guinea have managed to integrate the traditional drums with stringed instruments such as the guitar and ukulele to produce a musical style which is both exciting and pleasing. Micronesia (from mikros - small) is a group of small islands - including Yap, Truk (Chuuk), Kosrae, Ponape (Pohnpei), the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Saipan, Palau and Guam. The traditional music of Micronesia tells of the legendary histories, genealogies as well as navigational tales of the islands. The traditional music of Micronesia is very voice oriented with chanting, stomping and body percussion. The traditional musicians of Micronesia used very few instruments with the shell trumpet and nose flute being the most common, although standard flutes and harps are also found. A common idiophone in Micronesia is a stick that is carried by men in certain dances. An hourglass single- headed drum is also used and, in keeping with the ecology of atoll life, the skins of these drums are made from a shark's belly or parts of the stingray. MICRONESIA MUSIC ANTHOLOGY An anthology of traditional Micronesian Music is available on Micronesia Music Radio: http://www.live365.com/stations/jane_resture The anthology can be accessed by clicking on the Broadcast Schedule after logging in to Micronesia Music Radio. This should allow you (and our other listeners worldwide) to determine when the anthology is available in your beautiful part of the world. For example, on the Australian Gold Coast, the anthology is available at 12 noon each Saturday and Kiribati at 2 pm each Saturday afternoon. In California, the anthology is available at 7 pm each Friday evening, New York at 10 pm each Friday evening along with Florida and Boston, Massachusetts, USA. etc. The Broadcast Schedule can also be accessed at the following URL: http://www.live365.com/broadcast/scheduler/?stationname=jane_resture The supporting Web site to the anthology is as follows: http://www.janesoceania.com/micronesia_music_anthology/index.htm There is a rich body of work recorded by contemporary Micronesian musicians including Xavier Fethal, Bata Teinamati, Bikan Singers, Glenn "Poochie" Paulino, The Marshall Islands Navigators, Pat Martinez, County Light and Ray S. Manahane, who have successfully integrated modern western instruments with traditional vocals and stories. The music of Micronesia is featured exclusively on Micronesia Music Radio: http://www.live365.com/stations/jane_resture Polynesia comes from the Greek word Poly - many; and stretches in a huge triangle from New Zealand in the south-west to Easter Island 8,000 kilometres away in the south-east and as far again to Hawaii at its northern apex. Polynesians have a great passion for their music and, in particular the harmonic content which comes straight from the heart. The "Gospel Choirs" of Tahiti and Samoa are particularly astonishing. The gospel music of Polynesia (and many of the other Pacific islands) is proudly featured each Sunday from 12 noon to 3 pm Australian eastern standard time. GOSPEL MUSIC Pacific Islands Radio is very pleased to be able to advise that a collection of some of the most exciting and absorbing gospel music from the Pacific Islands is now being featured on Pacific Music Radio (FM mp3PRO Stereo), Pacific Islands Radio 33K (24 kbps) as well as Pacific Islands Radio 28K (16 kbps) With an extended running time of three hours, the gospel collection has proved to be extremely popular and features the music of a number of extremely talented artists and groups such as Vanessa Quai (Vanuatu), Bata Teinamati, Betania Gospel Singers and Emmaus Family Singers (Republic of Kiribati), Lia Osborne (Fiji), Aoloau Youth Choir (Samoa), and The Auckland Pacific Gospel Choir (New Zealand). Please monitor the Broadcast Schedule of the above three Pacific Islands Radio stations for the availability and time for the Gospel Music collection. I would very much like to share them with you as I find many of these letters to be most gratifying, motivating and touching. Please join with me in thanking these wonderful people for sharing their thoughts with us all. ************ Greetings from Honolulu... What a wonderful site you've created. Having been a life-long admirer of Pacific cultures, I'm interested in learning more about your [specific] location and/or the individual who has invented such an original melodic concept as Pacific Islands Radio. If possible, please forward any additional information about your brilliant internet music project. Aloha http://www.pacificislandsradio.com/index.htm Hello Jane, My name is Ruth Ghee. I am of Torres Strait, South Sea Island and Aboriginal descendant. I just happen to be surfing the net and came across the bio of Vanessa Quai. At the moment I am involved with the chaplaincy at the Redcliffe State High School 20mins nth of Brisbane. We will be going over to Vanuatu as part of the end of year school trip, taking with us 8 students yrs 9 - 12. We are departing Brisbane 3 dec 2004 and will be involved with doing some performances in singing, drama and dancing and worship at the Church of Christ. Is there a possibility of meeting this lovely young lady as I would see it as beneficial for the students that we are taking over there. These students are non- indigenous and I know are in for a culture shock, but I believe that Vanessa is a great role model for these students. Most of these students are special ed students and it would an eye opener for them to see a beautiful young black island teenager on a professional level. I am currently working at the Brisbane Powerhouse Pty Ltd as indigenous cultural consultant and am here 2 days a week Wednesdays and Thursdays and can be contacted on this address. I hope we can come to some sort of agreement or plan in regards to this request. Thank you http://www.pacificislandsradio.com/index.htm Just surfing google looking for clear water pictures and found your web site. This is fantastic.I can hardly wait to listen to this music. Now all I have to do is figure out to listen to these stations. Are these stations set up to be listen to over the internet or must you pull them in over a radio? I am near Sacramento California. Its amazing that a person can be anywhere in the world and find something like what you are doing. Thanks http://www.pacificislandsradio.com/index.htm Hi Jane, I just found your website in search for info on the Duca I had carved by John Wayne in Morovo Lagoon. We were there August 04 for a month cruising the islands. I can't express my feelings on how the people of those islands touched our hearts. We traded for carvings and baskets and now have lots of memories of the people we met who carved and wove these masterpieces. We don't however have any info on the Duca. I know it's a fertility god but that's all the info I was given by the carver. If you have any info on this I'd love you to share it with me. Thanks so much and I love your music on your web site. Regards http://www.pacificislandsradio.com/index.htm Congratulations Jane! One of the best sites I have seen in a long time! I am sure that I'll spend many hours dreaming of planning a trip to down under with all the information on your site. Listening to one of your radio sites now. Thanks for sharing!
