NEWS AND VIEWS

MICRONESIA MUSIC ANTHOLOGY

Firstly, I would like to thank all those
wonderful and good people who have taken the
time and opportunity to enjoy the anthology
of Micronesia music which is available on
Micronesia Music Radio:
http://www.live365.com/stations/jane_resture

The anthology can be accessed by clicking on the
Broadcast Schedule after logging in to Micronesia
Music Radio. This should allow you (and our other
listeners worldwide) to determine when the anthology
is available in your beautiful part of the world. For
example, on the Australian Gold Coast, the anthology
is available at 12 noon each Saturday and Kiribati at
2 pm each Saturday afternoon. In California, the
anthology is available at 7 pm each Friday evening,
New York at 10 pm each Friday evening along with
Florida and Boston, Massachusetts, USA. etc.

The Broadcast Schedule can also be accessed at
the following URL:
http://www.live365.com/broadcast/scheduler/?stationname=jane_resture

The supporting Web site to the anthology
is as follows:

GOSPEL MUSIC

Pacific Islands Radio is very pleased to be able
to advise that a collection of some of the most
exciting and absorbing gospel music from the
Pacific Islands is now being featured on Pacific
Music Radio (FM mp3PRO Stereo), Pacific
Islands Radio 33K (24 kbps) as well as Pacific
Islands Radio 28K (16 kbps)

With an extended running time of three hours,
the gospel collection has proved to be extremely
popular and features the music of a number of
extremely talented artists and groups such as
Vanessa Quai (Vanuatu), Bata Teinamati,
Betania Gospel Singers and Emmaus Family
Singers (Republic of Kiribati), Lia Osborne
(Fiji), and The Auckland Pacific Gospel Choir.

Please monitor the Broadcast Schedule of the
above three Pacific Islands Radio stations for
the availability and time for the Gospel Music
collection. At present this exciting collection
is available at 12 midday Australian eastern
time.

PACIFIC ISLANDS RADIO

Pacific Islands Radio continues to offer a range
of broadcasting formats in order to allow a wide
range of listeners to enjoy our beautiful island
music. These formats, in terms of Connection
Speed and Sound Quality are basically as
follows:

STATIONS

Pacific Music Radio with a connection speed of
32 kbps is FM Stereo - FM mp3PRO;

Pacific Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music
Radio 33K with connection speeds of 24 kbps are
AM Quality; and

Pacific Islands Radio 28K with a connection speed
of 16 kbps is AM Quality.

Perhaps I should mention also that the previous
practice of specifying a minimum connection speed
has now been upgraded. Now, instead of specifying
a bitrate, our broadcast formats are specified in
terms of a combination of bitrate, sampling rate,
stereo mode and codec.

These changes have allowed the introduction of
Pacific Music Radio (FM mp3PRO Stereo)
broadcasting in high fidelity FM stereo as well
as allowing an upgrade in the fidelity of Pacific
Islands Radio 33K and Micronesia Music Radio
33K while still broadcasting at the same bitrate
(24 kbps).

Also, in the longer term, 33K will be referred
to as 24kbps and 28K will become 16 kbps -
please keep an eye out for these changes.

As usual, Pacific Islands Radio is always keen
to promote our talented island musicians
worldwide in order to satisfy the continuing
demand for our beautiful and distinctive Pacific
Island music! In this respect, should you know
of any island artists whose talents you would
like to see promoted, please contact me on:
jane@pacificislandsradio.com

Our four Pacific Islands Radio Stations play the
enchanting music of the Pacific Islands 24 hours

RSA BAND - APIA, WESTERN SAMOA

A truly talented and gifted group of Western
Samoan musicians and composers, feature
popular favourite songs from Samoa in their
own inimitable style with beautiful harmonies
and vocals. RSA Band music was recorded
LIVE at the RSA Nite Club in Apia, Western
Samoa, and remastered by Patrick Phan of
Accent Recording Studio, Auckland, New
Zealand. RSA Band is extremely popular
throughout the Pacific region and elsewhere
along with many listeners of our Pacific Islands
Radio Stations!

THE MARSHALL ISLANDS NAVIGATORS

This band comprises nine female performers
along with five male musicians, vocalists and
composers. Their music embodies the very
best of Micronesian/Marshallese harmonies,
melodies and lyrics presented in a modern,
refreshing and very stylish manner. Their
magical Pacific Island sound is warm, bright
and uplifting. A listener is lured by the
enchanting and compelling sound and wants
to listen to it over and over again. Highly
recommended listening!

COOK ISLANDS CULTURE

If there is one outstanding ability which appears to
be shared by all Cook Islanders, it is music and song.
Close harmony singing is highly developed in Church
music and the power and emotional impact of chants
and hymns at weddings and funerals is well known to
visitors who attend. The range and talent of popular
singing can be seen at the numerous festivals
throughout the year. Each island also has its own
songs and the various island groups compete fiercely.
There are numerous Polynesian string bands who play
at restaurants, hotels and concerts and they use
combinations of modern electronics with traditional
ukeleles fashioned from coconut shells.

KIRIBATI MUSIC

The people of Micronesia have a deep love of
music from contemporary to traditional. Music can
be heard in the early morning, while the toddy cutters
are at work until late at night to the accompaniment
of the traditional dance. Small children as young as
two years of age will sing songs many of which are
both difficult and traditional. Old people can often
be heard singing to their small grand children while
they are minding them.

A COMPARISON OF
AUSTRONESIAN LANGUAGES

The Austronesian language group probably
enjoyed the widest physical dispersion of a
single language family prior to the European
colonial expansion following Columbus. From
the island of Madagascar, off the east coast
of Africa, all the way to tiny, isolated Easter
Island (Rapa Nui), and extending into Taiwan,
Vietnam, Northern Australia, New Zealand
and most of the Melanesian and Polynesian
islands, the languages in this single family
show the common ancestry by the many
cognates (words in common) present.

I was very fortunate to come across your
website now I would be able to send this
link to alot of my friends and family over
in the mainland to get island music blasting
out of their computers. Great work keep
it up

Dear Jane,
I've been meaning to write this for some time
now. I just want to let you know how much I
enjoy your Pacific Islands station on live365.com.
The music you play "talks" to me and is a super
way to pass the day while I'm working.
Have a wonderful day.
Best regards

Jane,
I thank you for this online radio station you
have, it's beautiful and now I can listen to
my Islands music from here in USA. I listen
to it every time I'm on net. I wish you put
more Chuukese and Yapese on and I also
like your music especially the church music.
So please keep it up and take care.

Hi Jane,
I have just found your website on Tonga. I
have found it very interesting and have
enjoyed the music playing in the background.
My son and I will be visiting Tonga in a few
months to visit my father's gravesite and we
look forward to enjoying some of the sights.
I did live in Tonga until I was 6 years old
and must admit I do not have many recollections
of the place but I look forward in anticipation
to at least walking where me and my family
did over 50 years ago.Regards

Just like to say good bands and music on your
station, nice to hear Fijian and south seas
music!!!!! Thanks again.from England.
